Prepare for Halloween!

Halloween can be a scary day for your child, but not just because of the ghosts and goblins.  Remember that your child thrives on structure, routine, and sameness.  Hearing your doorbell ring, seeing strangers, and looking at costumes can be pretty overwhelming.  You and your child can still enjoy Halloween and trick or treating, but just be aware of some of his sensitivities.  If you are staying at home, consider placing a card over the doorbell that requests that people knock instead.  Create a visual story to map out the steps involved with going to someone’s home to ask for candy.  If your child is non-verbal, have him hold up a sign that says, “Hi there!  Trick or treat?”  Have fun by being prepared!
